5 SIMPLE STEPS: Moving after Divorce

5 SIMPLE STEPS: Moving after Divorce

Getting Divorced? Here are Five Tips for a Professional Move during the Split

By DIVORCE360.COM

When you’re getting divorced, everything seems tough. Now you have to find a place to live. If you’re using a professional mover, here are five simple steps to make the process easier.

1.  Decide where you’re going and what to take with you.
Find a mover based on referrals from friends or Internet research. The mover should be registered or licensed by your state’s Department of Transportation.

2.  Get estimates.
Contact several movers for a home visit and a written estimate. Price is based on weight, packing and time and length of move. For the best deal, pack some of your things and make plans at least 30 days ahead of time.

3.  Check your costs.
Usually one estimate is very low or very high. Pick one of the two that are closer in price, which means the weight has been estimated correctly.

4. Take valuables with you.
If you can’t, have them -- and your paperwork -- sent to your new home using a mail service that can track them.

5. Get more information.
Go to moving.org and download a free guide called “Make A Smart Move.” The guide explains what you can expect from a professional mover.
