Parenting: 5 Books to Help Your School-Aged Child Cope with Divorce

    Are you a parent with a school-aged child who is going through a divorce? Are you searching for resources to help you help your child cope with the emotional upheaval and still perform well in school? Here are five books to help you keep your child on track in the classroom while they’re going through this emotional time at home.
 
1.  "The Truth About Children and Divorce: Dealing with the Emotions So You and Your Children Can Thrive," by Robert Emery, Ph.D. Emery, a divorce mediation expert and professor of psycholody at the  University of Virginia, gives practical advice on how to help children deal with the challenges they face as a result of their parents divorce. His book offers parents strategies for moving through the divorce process in a way that is least detrimental to the children involved.
 
2. "Parent Talk!: The Art of Effective Communication With the School and Your Child," By Cheli Cerra, M.Ed. As part of Cerra’s School Talk! series, this book details the most effective ways for parents to interact with teachers and administrators in a child’s school. The book uses

3. "Children of Divorce in School-Age Care," by Carole D. Weisberg. The author offers information on how school care providers can help transition students through a family divorce. It also describes how to recognize if a student is in distress.
 
4. "Divorce, Family Structure, and the Academic Success of Children," by William Jeynes. In this academic research work, Jeynes, is a professor of education at California State University in Long Beach, explains the relationship between family dynamics and school performance in children.
 
5. "Making Divorce Easier on Your Child: 50 Effective Ways to Help Children Adjust," by Nicholas Long, Ph.D. and Rex Forehand, Ph.D. Long and Forehand use their experience as clinical psychologists, as well as recent research results, to offers parents quick advice and options for handling divorce.
